There are many kinds of stories out there. Many types of media that they can be told from. In the past I have blogged about my fondness for video games. My appreciation of a video game consists of the plot, the characters, and the way its presented. In other words, to me, video games have the potential to be interactive novels. Something I believe is largely overlooked by most people. Games, as much as novels, shaped the way I viewed the world. I would read scary tales from books, and then play them on video games.
The reason children play in roles like that is because they want to interact with their stories, whether they are made up by someone else, or from themselves. Its what make-believe is all about. We want to pretend that we are those heroes we read about. We want those stories to come to life. We want to live in their world. We seek the peril so we can fight against what we fear the most. The unknown.
