Published authors advise to let your novel sit once you have completed the first draft. This cooling off period allows a writer to have a fresh look at the work that they just finished. It is suggested to do any number of things except edit, expand, or even look at your novel.
Essentially, that is what I have been doing for the last few weeks since I completed the first draft of my science-fiction novel, Supplicant. Sure, I was tempted to do a little revamping, but I knew it was for the best that I do something else. That something else, didn't mean I couldn't work on other aspects of the book.
While I finished the last few chapters of Supplicant, I began the outline for the sequel, Discordant. So, when I completed the first novel I was immediately ready to begin on the next. Within the next few days I will have reached 25,000 on the second novel. While I wait for feedback from beta-readers who graciously agreed to read it, I am pounding away at the keyboard.
For those who are on my Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest - you have seen the quotes from characters in the story with background art partially designed by me. The purpose, initially, was to rework art that had something to do with the scenes in which the quotes were said. I stumbled upon stock photo sites, and began using the free photos I found there to make my own.
I can't thank them enough for their help. Suggestions were welcome and acted upon. It was because of their assistance that these covers came into being. The first one garnered the most likes, and was a favorite with almost everyone on the thread. It is my favorite out of the bunch. I tried to incorporate everyone's suggestions into the different styles, and may not have pulled off everything as they conceptualized, but I did my best with the tools available to me. Thank you to those who took their time to give their opinion and advice.
Going forward, once I receive feedback from my beta readers, I will go through a first edit on Supplicant. This edit will be for clarification, definition, and cuts if they need them. Following this edit, I will edit for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Once that is done, then I will submit it to an editor for review. Then, after that, will be a final edit where I incorporate the editor's suggestions. Marketing and publishing will follow shortly after that.
